Biographies

Rónán Murray was born into a musical family and studied organ under the late Peter Sweeney. He holds associateships of The Royal College of Organists and Trinity College London, and is organist of St. Joseph's church, Glasthule. Past performance venues include St. Sulpice, Paris, Liverpool Cathedral, St. John's Cathedral, Newfoundland, and Lodz Cathedral, Poland. 2015 saw Rónán perform in Galway Cathedral in the summer recital series. Rónán is active as a freelance musician, composing and improvising across many genres.

He improvises scores for silent movies, which introduce the organ to new audiences. In November 2018, Rónán played for the inauguration of President Michael D. Higgins. Rónán opened the 2019 Pipeworks Festival with an improvised score for Murnau’s classic silent film, Nosferatu, in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, exploiting the cathedral’s mighty Willis organ. September 2022 saw Rónán perform in Wattenscheid, Germany.

Rónán advises on organ building projects, notably restoration and additions to the organ in Glasthule church carried out by Trevor Crowe, and expansion of the Kenneth Jones organ in Blackrock College chapel, also carried out by Trevor Crowe. Rónán regularly performs on the 1931 Compton Theatre Organ in University Concert Hall, Limerick, currently the only playable cinema organ in Ireland.
