Summer Concerts 2014

Galway Cathedral Recitals is delighted to announce its summer concerts for 2014, the 21st series to take place in Galway Cathedral.

The series is opened this year on Thursday 3 July by one of the most exciting organists working in Ireland today: Tristan Russcher, organist of St Bartholomew’s Church in Dublin, plays a programme which includes music by Bach, Duruflé, Pott and others; the Pott piece, Sonata, is receiving its Irish première.

The concert on Thursday 10 July features three local musicians. Flautist Joanne Cater, violinist Tom Murphy and Cathedral organist Raymond O’Donnell present a concert which includes some of Corelli’s charming trio-sonatas, as well as other music for those three instruments. This concert also features another Irish première, that of Valée des danses for organ by Dutch composer Ad Wammes.

Gerard Gillen needs no introduction to Irish audiences. Organist for many years of Dublin’s Pro-Cathedral, his performing career has so far spanned five decades. His recital on Thursday 17 July includes music by Pachelbel, Guilment, Stanford and others.

A concert of choral and organ music will be given on Thursday 24 July by Aachen Madrigal Choir from Germany, together with its conductor and organist Hans Leenders. The programme includes a mix of Baroque and 20th-centrury music.

Finnish organist Tuomas Pyrhönen’s programme on Thursday 31 July is centred around his own transcription for the organ of Schumann’s Kinderszenen (“Children’s scenes”), and also includes music by Mozart, Bach and Vierne as well as an improvisation.

The final concert in the series is given by Simon Thomas Jacobs, winner of the 2013 St Albans Organ Competition. His all-French programme on Thursday 7 August, including music by de Grigny, Boëlly, Franck and Tournemire, promises to show the Cathedral organ at its best.

Each concert is followed by an informal reception where the audience has an opportunity to meet the evening’s performers over a glass of wine.
