Galway Cathedral Recitals
Summer Concerts 2015

2 July – 6 August 2015
Thursdays at 8:00pm

Galway Cathedral Recitals is delighted to announce its international summer concerts for 2015, the 22nd series to take place in Galway Cathedral.

The most exciting highlight of the 2015 series is the community performance of Benjamin Britten’s cantata St Nicolas on 9 July. This large work is presented by a choir and orchestra assembled for the occasion from the many talented musicians in and around Galway; Tuam native Eoin Hynes sings tenor, and Cathedral organist Raymond O’Donnell conducts. This concert is also a major part of the year-long programme of events marking Galway Cathedral’s 50th anniversary, St Nicolas being one of the Cathedral’s patrons.

At the other end of the series, Irish mezzo-soprano Sharon Carty and German/Austrian recorder consort Veunv present “Orfea Britannica”, a quasi-operatic arrangement of Elizabethan and Jacobean songs and instrumental pieces, on 6 August.

World-renowned organist John Scott was organist for many years of St Paul’s Cathedral in London, and is now organist of St Thomas’ Church in New York. He plays a programme of Baroque, Romantic and 20th-century music on 16 July.

Young German organist Lisa Hummel, though still a student, was joint winner of the 2014 Dublin Organ Competition. Her performance on 30 July forms part of the prize from that competition: she plays music by Bach, Elgar, Messiaen and others.

Philip Scriven is organist-in-residence at Cranleigh School in Surrey, UK, and is widely recognised as one of the finest organists of his generation. He plays a programme of Bach, Wammes, Leighton and Vierne on 2 July.

Finally, Dublin organist Rónán Murry makes his Galway début on 23 July with an exciting programme of Baroque and Romantic music which includes an improvisation also.

Each concert is followed by an informal reception where the audience has an opportunity to meet the evening’s performers over a glass of wine. Admission to each concert is €15.00 (concessions €10.00), and a season ticket is also available.
